How to Clean the Skimmer & Pump Baskets ?

One of the most important yet overlooked tasks in pool maintenance is cleaning the skimmer and pump baskets. These baskets prevent leaves, hair, insects and other debris from getting to the pump, but they do not clean themselves. Blocked skimmer or pump baskets can restrict the amount of water going into the pool, thereby decreasing the turnover rate for clean, filtered water in the pool. Over time, this may overwork the pump and cause the seals to fail.

In order for your pump to work at maximum efficiency, the skimmer and pump baskets need to be cleaned regularly (at least once per week). You should replace damaged baskets as soon as possible to prevent debris getting through and clogging the impeller, causing reduced water flow. Remember, a properly running pool pump will facilitate proper circulation of chemicals and leave you with a sparkling clear pool.

Follow the steps below at least once a week to clean both the skimmer and pump baskets:

Skimmer Basket Cleaning:

• Turn off the pool pump.

• Remove the skimmer lid.

• Remove the skimmer basket and empty it out.

• Check for damage and wash it with a hose if necessary to remove material that is trapped in the basket.

• Put the basket back into the skimmer.

• Replace the skimmer lid and turn the system back on.

Pump Basket Essentials:

• Switch off the heater; allow water in the heater to cool down for 5-10 minutes before turning off the pool pump.

• Turn off the booster pump, if one is installed.

• If the pump is below the water line: turn off the skimmer and main drain valves.

• Remove the pump lid.

• Reach into the pump basket and remove as much debris as possible before removing the basket.

• Remove the basket; use a garden hose to clean the basket if needed; inspect basket for cracks and damage. Replace the pump basket if necessary

• Reinstall the pump basket. If you have a basket that twists into place, don’t over-tighten it.

• Examine the pump lid & o-ring for signs of damage or cracks, and use a light coating of silicone to lubricate the o-ring if it seems dry. Make sure the o-ring is completely free of leaves and debris to ensure a secure seal.

• Put the lid back in place, and do not over tighten. If you have to tighten the lid to get the pump to prime, the o-ring might need replacement.

• Check the filter valve is in the “filter” position.

• Slowly open the main drain valve until it is fully open.

• Open the air relief valve on the pool filter.

• Use the filter air bleed valve to remove any trapped air.

• Turn on the pool pump and wait until it is primed.

• Open the remaining skimmer valves.

• Watch for a steady stream of water from the air relief valve, then close the valve. is a leading supplier of pump baskets, skimmer baskets, pumps and related items from Hayward, American Products, Jacuzzi, Pac Fab, Sta-Rite and many others. The best way to keep your swimming pool in good shape

If you have a swimming pool, you should be concerned about its upkeep. Upkeep of a swimming pool includes: Keeping it clean and sanitary and ensuring the pool equipment is working at optimal performance. Water appearance may not be the only criteria by which you should judge your pool’s health. A perfectly blue clear pool may lack chlorine or other sanitizer at sufficient levels to ensure the safety of the swimmers. For this and many other reasons, you always have to make sure that your swimming pool is properly maintained at all times. The most important aspect is of course the level of the swimming pool sanitizer, typically chlorine. Removing excess debris from the pool will allow the chlorine level to be maintained at sufficient levels to be healthy. Remember anything that enters the pool will most likely reduce the chlorine level. This includes leaves, bugs, and bather load. For example: A fountain, while pretty, that spays water into the air, can reduce the chlorine level. There are numerous ways of keeping a swimming pool in perfect shape. Some of the major ways to always keep your swimming in a condition that is good enough for swimming are indicated in the passage.

• Ensure proper filtration of the Swimming Pool Water

In-pool-parts-3The swimming pool filter system is an important part of the proper maintenance of your pool. Your swimming pool filter should be cleaned frequently; A dirty filter can reduce the chlorine level of the pool and reduce the flow of water going back to the pool. Sand Filters should be backwashed when the pressure increases 3-5 pounds. Remember to turn off the pump when cycling between filter, backwash, and rinse. Repeat this process 2-3 times for best results. DE filters require the DE powder to be removed and replaced. Typically this is done when the pressure increases 3-5 pounds. Periodically, the filter will require opening and cleaning of the actual grids that are used to hold the DE powder. Finally, Cartridge filters require removal of the cartridge from its housing, and, hosing down the cartridge with a strong jet of water. When the filter media deteriorates, replacing the swimming pool filter cartridge.

This includes emptying of bags, leaf canisters and pump baskets.

Chemical treatment of water:

Apart from cleaning the filter and ensuring the circulation system is working out at optimum performance, water chemistry is extremely important. Pool water should be tested weekly for pH and Chlorine levels. Alkalinity, Calcium, and Cyanuric Acid levels should be checked monthly. The key to water testing is to have a professional quality water test kit and to make sure the chemicals in the kit are fresh. Replacing the test kit chemicals periodically is essential.

Five Swimming-Pool Maintenance Tips That You Must Follow

Keeping your swimming pool sparkling clean does not have to be as troublesome as you might think. All swimming-pools are diverse, and so are their maintenance requirements. However, they all share one theme: the key to unspoiled swimming-pool health is regular maintenance. Although you left the job to a professional pool cleaning company, but still you need to do a few things to make sure your pool remains in great condition for years to come.

Skim debris and clean out baskets:

filters imagesSkimming the surface of your pool by hand in regular interval is the best thing you can do to keep your pool fresh and clean. Floating leaves and debris will eventually sink, becoming tougher to remove? Use a hand skimmer to take away bugs, leaves, and other undesired stuff. Skimming considerably improves the effectiveness of the swimming-pool’s circulation system and lessens the quantity of chlorine you will require to put into your pool.

Vacuum the swimming and brush tile and walls:

A pool must be vacuumed every week to keep water crystal clear and decrease the quantity of chemicals you require to put into it.

However, vacuuming is not the lone task that must be accomplished once a week. Brushing the walls and tile helps curtail algae buildup and calcium deposits so they don’t aggravate and become bigger issues.

Clean the swimming -pool filter:

There’re 3 types of swimming-pool filters: sand, cartridges and diatomaceous earth. While there are diverse maintenance procedures for each kind, all need periodic cleaning. Cleaning the filter reduces the chlorine consumption and keeps the pump running smoothly. However, regular cleaning of pool filter is not recommended as it can reduce the filter ability to filter fine particles. Instead, clean the filter when the pressure rise 3-5 pounds over the clean pressure.

Check and sustain the water level:

imagesA large amount of water will be lost during the swimming season due to evaporation, splashing and back washing. When the pool water level is set to the middle of the Swimming pool skimmer baskets and the skimmer door is functioning properly. Debris will be skimmed off the surface reducing the need to skim the pool and vacuuming the pool. Be sure to empty the skimmer basket, not doing so can damage the pool pump by restricting water flow to the pump.

Maintain the pH level:

Swimming-pool water must be tested on a regular basis to ensure it is properly balanced and sanitized. The pH is particularly important as it affects the efficiency of the chlorine. A reading between 7.4 and 7.6 is perfect, and 7.2 to 7.8 is acceptable in most cases. A Higher pH will reduce the chlorine ability to combat algae, bacteria and germs. Lower pH will cause the chlorine to be too active.

Install a Pool Skimmer Basket to Keep Your Pool Clean

With the summer season approaching, many home owners are thinking to escape the intolerable heat and humidity while relaxing in their personal swimming pools. Keeping the pool clean is a chore that must be done. One feature of most pools is the pool skimmer. The skimmer, when operated properly, can greatly reduce debris in the pool, making cleaning a much simpler process. There are three essential things to understand how a skimmer works: The weir, skimmer basket and the water level.

skimmer basketWhat exactly does a pool skimmer do? It’s function is removing debris floating on the pool surface such as leaves, small insects, and dust. Most pools have at least one skimmer. Some pools can have too or more. Simply stated removing debris from the surface keeps the pool cleaner. The skimmer consists of two parts the skimmer door called a weir and the skimmer basket. In order for the skimmer to work properly, the water level of the pool must be maintained at the middle of the skimmer opening. Try to adjust the pool returns, in such a manner that water circulates toward the skimmer.

The skimmer basket has an important role, namely keeping the large debris from getting to the pump and reducing the pool pumps ability to pump water. Cracked baskets should be replaced.

The weir acts as a small waterfall. When the pump is on, the weir door is pulled back slightly towards the basket, causing the surface water to be pulled into the skimmer by cascading over the top of the weir, removing surface debris.

Recently, solar powered pool skimmers have appeared in the market. Conceptually they work the same as a normal skimmer. For pools that do not have a built in skimmer this might be a solution.

No matter what kind of swimming pool you have the proper use of the skimmer weir and a functioning skimmer basket is essential in keeping your pool clean. At MyPool we have a large selection of skimmer baskets and skimmer weirs. As the swimming pool owner, water safety of everybody using your swimming pool is your responsibility.
